Symrise scoops four BSB Innovation Awards for climate-conscious cosmetics
26 Apr 2022 --- Fragrance and flavors expert, Symrise has won four prizes from the European BSB Innovation Awards 2022 for its cosmetic innovations focused on environmentally sustainable beauty ingredients and technology.
The awarded ingredients in first prize include SymHair Thermo for the Most Innovative Natural Product in Hair Care and Track4Trust for its design to track and trace ingredients throughout the sourcing process.
In second prize came Hydrolite 7 green, a 100% bio-based caprylyl glycol in the Functionals category.
SymFerment was recognized in the Actives division within the “Plumping, moisturization and barrier” category at third place.
Prize-worthy ingredients
SymHair Thermo is a 100% natural ingredient that provides thermal protection to the hair.
The active ingredient is derived from traditional Chinese medicine mushrooms and saccharides; the active ingredient protects hair fibers from heat tool damage. Additionally, the styling effects are long-lasting and effective in high humidity, shares Symrise.
Hydrolite 7 green, a seven-carbon alkanediol, is derived from 100% bio-based sources, from “sustainably sourced castor bean oil.”
“The one-of-a-kind multifunctional ingredient comes as a clear, colorless, neat substance that can go into a variety of traditional or natural/green cosmetic formulations and works well with all skin types,” shares Symrise.
SymFerment is derived from upcycling processes from which valuable side streams are obtained. These are then turned into “effective ingredients that provide moisturizing and soothing benefits for the skin, including strengthening the skin barrier.”
Lastly, the Track4Trust app achieves transparency and traceability of ingredients to meet consumer demands. “The digital app allows customers to easily find product characteristics and sustainability properties by scanning a QR code.”
Symrise notes that multiple ingredients within its cosmetic ingredient portfolio have recently received awards.
The company previously received an award for its poster on Dragosine, an ingredient protecting the skin from the effects of blue light.
Carrying the eco-conscious torch
Symrise describes this achievement as a demonstration of the company’s position to develop sustainable cosmetic ingredients.
“These four prizes at this year’s BSB Innovation Awards, further highlight our commitment to innovation and sustainability,” remarks Jörn Andreas, president of cosmetic ingredients at Symrise.
“This demonstrates great recognition for our global teams from research and development to product development across our business in hair care, micro-protection, skin actives and sustainability. This award inspires us to continue developing high-quality, powerful and innovative products for our customers.”
Partnering to leverage eco-solutions
Symrise’s awards falling under environmentally sustainable beauty solutions come as Korean researchers mark a new era in the beauty space. Consumers demand more transparency and expect environmental and social responsibility from companies.
Probiotics manufacturer Probi Symrise previously unveiled SymFerment, a skincare ingredient made from Probi’s upcycled Lactiplantibacillus (Lactobacillus) fermentation, touted to boost skin moisturization.
“By upcycling the byproduct from probiotic fermentation, Probi is reducing its environmental footprint, while Symrise is offering an ingredient to the cosmetic market,” Léa Schmidt, global product manager at Symrise, told PersonalCareInsights at the time.
In further collaborations, Symrise and CRIEPPAM partnered to produce Symrise’s next generation of white lavender plants while also aiming to improve its supply chains in concern for the farmers.
The company also partnered with Antofénol to leverage eco-extraction for natural products.
