Symrise and Antofénol clean beauty collaboration to leverage eco-extraction for natural products
10 Mar 2022 --- Scent and care specialist Symrise has joined forces with eco-extraction technology expert Antofénol to co-develop environmentally friendly products. The two companies aim for natural solutions to replace traditional “argoextracts” with eco-extraction using microwaves, ultrasound and vacuum technologies.
Microwaves are used to break down plant cell walls. Ultrasounds break down molecular components, and the vacuum protects sensitive molecules by managing molecular oxidation and extraction temperature, describes Antofénol.
“We expect this [partnership] to provide us with new sustainable and innovative cosmetic ingredients and plant-based unique developments for our Scent and Care segment,” says Dr. Marielle Le Maire, senior VP at Symrise.
Symrise says that Antofénol’s technologies provide many advantages as they can be adapted to various raw materials. It also uses “fast and effective energy transfer” and thus, saves time in comparison to conventional methods.
On the other hand, Symrise will add to the partnership by researching and developing products. It will also apply its knowledge of the market and consumer demand.
The partnership comes when other brands urge industry to take steps for cleaner beauty.
Demands for sustainable natural sourcing
“Environmentally friendly manufactured products form an important pillar of our sustainability strategy,” says Dr. Martina Herrmann, director of phytochemistry global innovation cosmetic ingredients at Symrise.
The company explains that its collaboration meets the increasing customer and consumer demands for “naturalness, environmentally friendly and resources preserving manufacturing conditions.”
Symrise shares that its commercial success is influenced by sourcing natural products from up-cycled renewable side streams with traceability.
“We also expect that our food component production [Flavor & Nutrition division] will benefit from greener and faster extraction technologies,” says Dr. Marielle.
The Scent & Care segment of Symrise and Flavor & Nutrition division of Antofénol will work in collaboration.
