Seppic study reveals Aquaxyl enhances skin microbiome balance and hydration
Key takeaways
- Aquaxyl enhances skin microbiome balance by promoting the growth of beneficial bacteria and inhibiting the formation of pathogenic biofilms.
- It supports skin barrier integrity, aiding in hydration and preventing dysbiosis.
- The microbiome skin care market is growing rapidly, according to Seppic.

Seppic has found that its flagship active ingredient, Aquaxyl, has prebiotic efficacy in reinforcing skin microbiome balance for hydration formulations. The in vitro investigations provide evidence of Aquaxyl’s action on the skin barrier, using a microbiome-balancing approach through dual biological actions.
As a selective prebiotic action (at 1.5%), the active ingredient notably enhances the growth of beneficial commensal bacteria, including Staphylococcus epidermidis (+28%) and Corynebacterium xerosis (+25%). Both bacteria are vital for sustaining skin barrier integrity.
Aquaxyl was also shown to inhibit pathogenic biofilms (at 3%). The data show a 59% reduction in Staphylococcus aureus biofilm formation in a reconstructed human epidermis model. By mitigating the attachment and growth of these microorganisms, Aquaxyl helps avert dysbiosis and supports skin homeostasis.
The ingredient has been used by over 2,500 brands globally over the past five years. Seppic notes it has established itself as a key ingredient in the hydration sector. Aquaxyl uses Seppic’s patented sugar complex: Xylitylglucoside, anhydroxylitol, and xylitol.
Seppic says the active stands out against competitors due to its multifunctionality and durability, demonstrating efficacy across a wide range of phototypes.
The company further outlines that the microbiome skin care market is valued at approximately US$438 million in 2024 and projected to reach US$1.4 billion by 2034.
The growing microbiome skin care market reflects consumer literacy and understanding of the microbiome as the arbiter of skin barrier integrity and protection against pathogens, says Seppic.
A balanced skin microbiome and ecosystem help reinforce skin health and prevent skin diseases.
