Eastman and Toly introduce recyclable makeup compact
Eastman and Toly have launched Gemini, a sustainable cosmetic compact using Eastman’s recyclable Cristal One Renew IM812 resin. The collaboration marks the first time the resin is used in a makeup compact.
Gemini has “glass-like” thick PET walls with fully certified recycled content, distilled through molecular recycling.
Tara Cary, global cosmetics market manager at Eastman, says: “This innovative solution ensures your packages not only meet today’s standards but are ready for the legislative demands of tomorrow, providing peace of mind and sustainability in each package.”
In an interview with Packaging Insights, Cary explains how Eastman aims to target non-recycled materials and leverage molecular technologies to keep them in use by recycling them into new materials. “Each year, 300 million metric tons of plastic are produced globally. Yet only 16% of that plastic is collected for recycling, and only 12% is recycled.”
The Gemini compact fits into existing PET recycling streams and is certified by organizations like RecyClass.

Toly and Eastman will showcase the compact at the Luxe Pack Monaco trade show from September 30 to October 2.
Adopting recyclable resin
Toly is a Malta-based supplier of beauty, cosmetics, skin care, and fragrance packaging. The company is committed to “responsible practices and materials” that balance performance and environmental impact.
Recently, Eastman launched its Esmeri CC1N10, a biodegradable and non-microplastic color cosmetic enhancer for lipsticks. It also supplied SUQQU with its Cristal One copolyester for the Japanese beauty brand’s setting powder compact.
Eastman also offers reusable and refillable personal care products to meet growing consumer demand for sustainable options. For example, in March, Eastman equipped Japanese cosmetic company Fancl with reusable primary packaging and refillable cartridges for its new skin care line Toiro — an “important step in circular beauty,” according to the company.
