In-cosmetics Global 2023: Nouryon, Solvay and Clariant launch hair and skincare solutions
09 Mar 2023 --- The in-cosmetics Global trade show is coming up this month in Barcelona, Spain. Major industry players are presenting and launching beauty and health solutions leading to the show. PersonalCareInsights shares the latest launches by Nouryon, Solvay and Clariant, which will be showcased at the exhibit.
“Party hair” and sun care
Nouryon is presenting sun care solutions using its latest technology of SolAmaze polymer solution. This 100% bio-based film is water resistant and provides high-SPF emulsion in sunscreens.
Nouryon reports that SolAmaze polymer has been globally approved. Additionally, the product was developed to be non-toxic to aquatic life while maintaining the performance of effective synthetic polymers.
“More than ever, health and wellness are becoming the key drivers in innovation for the personal care industry. Consumers want to take care of their skin and protect their bodies against the sun,” says Nouryon.
“Nouryon is taking suncare formulations to an even higher level by including sustainable skincare ingredients. We use upcycled materials with our Amaze Nordic Barley starch, bio-based cellulose gums with our Cekol range and bio-based starches with our Dry-Flo.”
Moreover, Nouryon recognizes that people want to get together and show their best version, especially after the COVID-19 pandemic. The company has noted consumers want to experiment with hair type-specific formulations and are looking for functional and personalized hair care.
Dubbed an “all-star hero product,” Nouryon formulators use Amphomer polymer to develop party hair styling products to meet consumer demand.
“Amphomer polymer offers market-leading stiffness and unprecedented high humidity curl retention properties. Together with the DynamX polymer, Nouryon’s solutions are designed especially for dynamic hairstyles allowing hair to move freely and return to its original shape,” says the company.
“We also use our top nature-derived starches such as Dry-Flo and Structure XL to complement excellent rheology and aesthetic modification.”
At in-cosmetics Global, Nouryon will present hair styling prototypes – Shine On, Whip Whip Hooray! and Color me Crazy.
Heat protection in hair care
In the hair care niche, Solvay has launched Polycare Heat Therapy for bio-based thermal protection. It is based on active ingredients from natural guar that adds to the silicone-free beauty care solutions of the company.
The functional, active ingredient is said to protect that hair from thermal damage from repeated use of hair styling appliances. Moreover, the double-derivatized cationic guar ingredient is also non-ecotoxic.
The launch falls under the global trend of bio-based and silicone-free solutions in hair care.
“Polycare Heat Therapy addresses the challenge of protecting hair against thermal damage caused by high-heat devices such as flat or curling irons and hair dryers,” explains Stephanie Neplaz, global innovation marketing director of Hair Care at Solvay.
“As the market’s best naturally-derived performer in this segment, it helps brand owners replace incumbent silicone and other synthetic polymers and complements our broad portfolio of bio-based beauty care ingredients.”
Heat is flagged to cause “severe damage” like dehydration, delipidation, brittleness, porosity, reduced surface and loss of softness. Heat damage to hair makes it difficult to restore the hair to its former healthy and sensory state. This is why using heat protectants on hair is vital.
“Polycare Heat Therapy forms an invisible and imperceptible barrier on the hair surface. As a multifunctional ingredient, it adds discipline, straightening effect and softness while also improving detangling and wet comb-ability without build-up in multiple applications,” says Solvay.
“Comprehensive testing at Solvay has demonstrated that this silicone-free solution can reduce thermally induced hair damage by up to 30%.”
Polycare Heat Therapy is reportedly ethically sourced from renewable sources through the company’s Sustainable Guar Initiative in India.
Biodegradable and multifunctional emollient
Clariant has launched Plantasens Pro LM emollient, dubbed as versatile and 100% natural. Suggested applications are for skincare, sun care and color cosmetic applications.
Plantasens Pro LM is also readily biodegradable, COSMOS and Natrue certified.
The company responds to the growing demand for healthy skin with the product launch that moisturizes the skin and can be combined with UV filters and pigments. Thus, opening the doors to multifunctional applications, such as makeup that also delivers hydration.
“We see increasingly skincare-educated consumers who seek to maximize benefits from their skincare routines and, in particular, seek moisturizing benefits throughout their routine – from cleansing to makeup application. Plantasens Pro LM addresses exactly this. It’s a highly moisturizing and natural emollient that combines well with pigments and UV filters,” says Michael Haspel, head of Personal and Home Care at Clariant.
Over 700 ingredient suppliers are anticipated to showcase the latest innovations, including global cosmetics suppliers like DSM and International Flavors & Fragrances.
“More than ever, we’re seeing sustainability dominate conversations, with suppliers, manufacturers and brands all dedicating time and budget to understand how they can minimize their impact on the planet,” says Roziani Zulkifli, event director at in-cosmetics Global.
