Solvay presents biodegradable guar polymers for personal care
22 Mar 2022 --- France-based Solvay is expanding its Jaguar range of biodegradable guar-based polymers with two new functional polymers for skin and haircare.
Jaguar NAT SGI and Jaguar Excel polymers will give Solvay’s partners access to new formulations which address increasing global regulations and consumer demand for climate-friendly beauty products.
The new polymers enter the Jaguar range alongside Jaguar HP-8 COS SGI for thickening and Jaguar C500 STD for conditioning. The polymers are suitable for use in shampoos, hair treatments, conditioners, styling gels, body washes and powder-to-liquid cleansers.
Jean-Guy Le-Helloco, vice president of Home & Personal Care at Solvay details: “Until recently, the availability of biodegradable functional polymers in the market has been limited.”
“Our biodegradable Jaguar ingredients offer formulators a range of sustainable game changers to create a wider choice of responsible hair and skincare products.”
Solvay’s Jaguar line of environmentally sustainable guar-based polymers was launched in December 2021. To celebrate this launch, the company also introduced its Beauty Biodeg Score, Solvay’s ecological scoring system based on OECD guidelines for multinational enterprises.
The scoring system ranges from A to D, with A being the most biodegradable and D being the least. Of the two new Jaguar polymers, Jaguar Nat SGI received a score of A as a readily biodegradable thickening polymer. Meanwhile, Jaguar Excel received a B score as an inherently ultimately biodegradable conditioning polymer.
Galder Cristobal, director of Home and Personal Care Research & Innovation at Solvay adds: “By assigning a biodegradability score to our products, we help external stakeholders appreciate the swift progress Solvay is making in the development of biodegradable and sustainable products with full and transparent traceability.”
“We have entered a new phase of innovation with new polymer technologies and are investing in advanced biodegradation testing for next-generation beauty ingredients. Our new biodegradable Jaguar ingredients are just the beginning,” he adds.
Renewable resource: Guar beans
Solvay uses guar beans which are ecologically produced via the company’s Sustainable Guar Initiative, which takes place in Rajasthan, India.
The beans are a natural local renewable resource, and Solvay’s Sustainable Guar Initiative helps farmers producing the beans learn climate-friendly cultivation practices, conserving groundwater and improving quality of life.
Solvay’s program also improves the standing of women farms, ensuring an ethical and secure guar supply chain for the company’s partners.
Recently, Solvay expanded production of its polymers at its facility in Melle, France.
