Webinar Preview: CP Kelco to reveal strategies for clean and green skin care formulations
06 Sep 2023 --- Consumers today expect their skin care products to have a cleaner label, with more “natural” and environmentally sustainably sourced ingredients. In an upcoming Personal Care Insights webinar on September 14, specialists from CP Kelco and Innova Market Insights will share their knowledge on market trends alongside reformulation strategies for serums, lotions and creams to meet evolving consumer expectations.
The upcoming webinar will cover the latest skin care trends from Innova Market Insights, with inputs from CP Kelco on new ingredient options, emulsions stability techniques, “free-from” claims and insights on how new packaging can also mean reformulation.
“Formulators typically face the challenge of finding a nature-based emulsifier that can effectively and easily stabilize oil-in-water emulsions in personal care products and still provide a unique and satisfying sensorial experience to consumers,” Sandra Catarino, director of Global Strategic Segments at CP Kelco, tells us.
“CP Kelco offers Kelcosens Citrus Fiber, which can be used as a stabilizer and emulsifier in serums, lotions and gel creams at inclusion levels up to 30% oil.”
CP Kelco upcycles citrus fiber from byproducts of the juicing industry to create its stabilizing and emulsifying ingredient Kelcosens.Circular citrus fiber
Catarino underscores that certain ingredients, such as acrylates and PEG emulsifiers, have been losing traction on the market as they fall out of alignment with naturality.
Presented as an alternative, CP Kelco’s citrus fiber is upcycled from citrus peels, a byproduct of the juice industry, which contributes to the circular economy in skin care.
“It can also be formulated without heat and blended with other ingredients, such as gellan or diutan gum, to fine tune texture without soaping,” adds Catarino.
CP Kelco featured its Kelcosens ingredient at the In-Cosmetics show in Barcelona, Spain, and at the New York Society of Cosmetic Chemists’ Suppliers’ Day, held in New York City, US, earlier this year.
At the event, the company also invited visitors to play at its “texture bar” and test a range of bio-based ingredient prototypes. Attendees were able to experiment with a range of textures using CP Kelco’s flexible chassis formulations and go from silky, water-thin to creamy and luxe just by switching the natural solutions options.
Upcycling gaining ground
New upcycling methods and sources have been extensively explored in product development this year, as industry moves on both its waste reduction targets and innovation surrounding value-added ingredient discovery.
Among notable advances, Korea’s Amino Lab recently unveiled a functional shampoo created with technology that upcycles livestock blood into functional substances that relieve hair loss symptoms.
Last month, deodorant brand Wild and London-based design and innovation firm Morrama created a plastic-free and compostable refillable shower gel bottle made from excess potato chip waste. Once the refill is empty, it can be put in a compost pile or general waste, where it will biodegrade “faster than a banana peel,” which is two years on average.
According to Innova Market Insights, 46% of global consumers always take sustainability into account when buying personal care products.
Vegan claims also grew to 23% of launches in 2022. However, consumers also expect their skin care products to offer high performance and an innovative, sensory experience.
Personal Care Insights’ roundtable discussion with CP Kelco and Innova Market Insights will take place on September 14, 2023 at 10 am EST / 4 pm CET. Attendees of the webinar can register here.
