IFF: “Sustainability...

IFF: “Sustainability is more than a trend. It is the future of the industry”

17 Apr 2023 | International Flavors & Fragrances

At In-Cosmetics Global 2023, International Flavors & Fragrances presented Aurist AGC, a biodegradable cationic conditioning biopolymer. The ingredient won gold at the Innovation Zone under the Functional Category. Piera Mattia Pericu, market segment leader of personal care and Johan Jansén-Storbacka, director of personal care elucidate on the importance of replacing petrochemicals with biodegradable alternatives that perform well and are efficacious.

This is Va Patelel, acting editor at Personal Care Insights, speaking with IFF.

Can you introduce yourselves, please?

So I'm in Slovakia.

I'm in charge of our personal care business at IFF Health and Biosciences, and I'm Pierre Perriu, market segment lead of personal care at IFF Health and bioscience.

OK, perfect.

Thank you so much for your time here.

Let's just jump into the questions.

Firstly, what are you presenting at the show?

Oh, we are here to present our AGC and, new, catonic polymer, which has a.

Properties, this material is relatively biodegradable and bio-based and , we are shortlisted for the innovation award as as we are presenting at the sensory bar bar and competing for the sensory bar award as.

Exciting.

So it's super exciting.

This material is based on the design biopolymer, antibiotic biopolymer technology, DEB, which is new to the world technology by IFF.

Perfect.

Moving on to another question, how are these biodegradable solutions shaping new developments?

So what we see is that biodegradability is becoming a very important aspect of sustainability and sustainability.

Is, is really top of mind for many of our customers and, and, and for consumers, as.

Now the challenge is how do we not just deliver products that are sustainable but really perform better while being sustainable.

We think that our new platform like the design enzymatic biopolymers can really help to break this trade-off between sustainability and performance.

And so, why are these bio-based solutions.

Important in haircare at the moment.

As we just said, there are big challenges in the industry, and one of those is, of course, the replacement of non-biodegradable or petrochemical origin materials, and haircare, of course, has this challenge like the skincare has and the performance, given that the consumers are so focused on performance and.

We see that this is becoming more complicated to achieve the biodegradability or the sustainability on one side and then still keep the performance at a good level.

So it's very important to help the industry, particularly the healthcare segment, to provide solutions that are good for the consumer so the consumer can keep buying the product.

And that they are bio-based or let's say biodegradable or sustainable at a good sustainable profile.

This is critical to make a difference and help our customers to reach their sustainability goals.

So that leads on nicely to the to the next question.

So what are some trends that you're tapping into and which areas are you planning to expand into the near future?

So, , sustainability, we've talked a lot about that already.

It's, it's, I think it's, it's more than a trend.

It's really the future of this industry in, in many ways, and the type, the technologies that, that we developed through the design asmatic bio polymer platform, it's, it's really a platform, it's a toolbox, and, we're optimistic that this is going to help.

To shape the future of this industry, addressing some of the hardest problems while doing it sustainable.

OK, thank you so much for your time and have a great show ahead.

Thank you.

Thank you.
