Shinsung Materials has secured a Korean patent and achieved US quality standards for its high-purity, water-soluble Ecamsule UV-A filter. The company says the development could broaden the ingredient’s applications in cosmetic formulations.
Ecamsule has achieved a USP 44 standard, meeting the official US chemical purity, safety, and quality specifications required for use in over-the-counter (OTC) sunscreen products. However, FDA approval for finished products is still necessary.
Until recently, US formulators were locked out of the modern UV filters available in markets such as South Korea and Europe due to regulatory barriers, creating a formulation gap between the regions.
While K-beauty pushed sun care toward more lightweight, invisible, and skin care-like formulations, many US companies were stuck with a decades-old ingredient lineup.
Ecamsule has been used in some FDA-approved sunscreens in the US since 2006. However, it is not broadly authorized as an active ingredient under OTC sunscreen rules. The USP 44 standard now gives Shinsung Materials a recognized US quality benchmark for the ingredient.
Consumers increasingly expect their sun care formulations to offer strong protection without the heavy, greasy feel or white cast that traditional SPFs leave behind. As formulators are pushed to modernize sun care formulas, Ecamsule’s standard expands access to another formulation option.
Expanded gel lineup
Beyond the quality standard, Shinsung Materials also announced it is expanding its portfolio of naturally derived oil gelling agents. These ingredients include Dextrin Palmitate and Stearoyl Inulin. They are used to control oil viscosity and improve the stability of creams, balms, and sunscreens.
Shinsung Materials is expanding access to its portfolio of UV filters and texture-enhancing cosmetic ingredients.One of the company’s existing grades, OG-DP11, has already obtained COSMOS (cosmetics organic and natural standard) approval, making it suitable for use in clean beauty formulations.
Shinsung Materials is also developing several new variants of its Dextrin-based thickeners. According to the company, each offers a different balance of gel strength, softness, and transparency.
OG-DP25 is designed for a softer texture than OG-DP11, which is touted as firmer. DM14, another variant, is said to maintain high transparency and provide a gentle, smooth feel on the skin.
Meanwhile, DPE33 offers thixotropic properties, allowing it to flow when squeezed but firm when left still.
The company says these ingredients are still in the R&D phase, but they reflect its goal of offering a full toolbox for brands chasing a K-beauty feel.
