Symrise hails Hydrolite 6 green as eco-friendly multifunctional cosmetic ingredient
16 Nov 2022 --- Symrise is introducing Hydrolite 6 green as the “first green 1,2-hexanediol” in the cosmetics market. The company is marketing the ingredient as multifunctional and compatible with all skin types.
The 1,2-hexanediol is a moisture-binding ingredient that has been scientifically proven as beneficial for the skin and hair, according to SpecialChem. It is used in a wide range of products all across the cosmetic industry, such as cleansing and bath products.
“Hydrolite 6 green meets [quality and sustainability] requirements by combining high purity, multiple benefits and [environmentally] sustainable raw material source,” says Dr. Nikolas Bugdahn, director of New Molecules Synthesis at Symrise.
Symrise details that the cosmetic industry has used traditional 1,2-hexanediol for decades, particularly for product protection. However, the company’s latest Hydrolite 6 green is a variant that can help solubilize lipophilic cosmetic ingredients and improve the sensory profile of formulations.
According to the company, this ingredient is moisturizing and enhances product protection while stabilizing emulsions due to smaller droplet sizes.
Multifunctional trend
With Hydrolite 6 green, Symrise has expanded its portfolio of green 1,2-alkanediols – including Hydrolite 5 green, Hydrolite 7 green and Hydrolite 8 green – to present chain lengths from 5 to 8 as the “first company on the cosmetic market.”
“The raw material comes from sustainable sources. Hydrolite 6 green can go into conventional and green formulations and all formulation types. Its exceptional mildness makes it compatible with all skin types, even the most delicate ones,” the company states.
It reiterates that multifunctional ingredients benefit formulators and consumers alike, as they offer a minimalistic approach to skincare.
“They achieve the same high quality and performance as more complex formulations. The 1,2-Alkanediols represent a family of multifunctionals with particularly robust stability, safety and versatility. As product protection enhancers, they have become essential components of modern product protection systems.”
Sustainably sourced ingredients
With the launch, Symrise is making strides in offering eco-friendly alternatives that is reflecting the rising demand for environmentally sustainable alternatives.
“With Hydrolite 6 green, we are expanding our portfolio of sustainable multifunctional ingredients,” says Dr. Balint Koroskenyi, senior global product manager of Cosmetics Ingredients Division at Symrise. “This allows us to meet the demands of both consumers and our customers as we contribute to having more sustainable options in cosmetics.”
Furthermore, on supply chain transparency and ethically sourced ingredients, Symrise previously told PersonalCareInsights, “We are engaging directly with farmers and their communities.”
The company claims a lot is being done to ensure that the workers across the supply chains are paid well and treated ethically. “To do so, we are working with various NGO partners. They help us build sustainable supply chains and support farmers in developing sustainable cultivation practices via farmer field schools and other education programs.”
