Univar Solutions and Croda partner to boost mineral-based sun care in Brazil
11 May 2023 --- As sun care products proliferate in Brazil, Univar Solutions and Croda have partnered in a distribution agreement to expand the mineral sunscreen product selection in the space and bolster the Solaveil, Infraveil and Optisol product ranges.
The addition of Croda’s specialty ingredients for sun care filters will boost Univar Solutions’ beauty and personal care offering. Croda’s suncare filters are used in facial and body lotions formulated with ultraviolet (UV) physical filters. The Solaveil, Infraveil and Optisol product ranges are based on the mineral titanium dioxide (TiO2), which gives the products a higher “transparency” profile.
“With this new supplier authorization, Univar Solutions can support Brazilian customers seeking the specialty ingredients needed to produce protective sun care products, which is a growing category,” says Tony Jaillot, global VP for beauty and personal care at Univar Solutions.
Amid ongoing debate about the safety of TiO2, recent research found that when incorporated into mesoporous silica it can be considered a broad-spectrum ingredient for innovative sunscreens, particularly for the photoprotection of lips.
Tanning and transparency
Univar Solutions’ specialized beauty and personal care business spans sun care, skin care, color cosmetics and hair care.
“We know that while today’s skin care solutions must be high performing, they must also integrate ingredient transparency, as consumers are becoming increasingly aware of the impact that products have on individuals, society and the planet,” says Jaillot.
“Univar Solutions’ extensive distribution network, product knowledge and local technical support will provide an opportunity to create more innovative solutions for sun care products based on the growing demand for mineral sunscreens – the natural ingredients,” says Paulo Sevilha, Latin America sales and marketing director at Croda.
In 2022, L’Oréal introduced its newest sun filtering technology, UVMune 400. The ingredient protects the skin against ultra-long UVA rays. The new solution prevents sun-induced deep skin damage, which is deemed a major public health issue.
In related news, Univar Solutions and Angus Chemical Company scaled their distribution partnership for beauty chemicals to North America. The company also went private after a US$ 8.1 billion merger mega-deal with Apollo Funds.
