Weekly Roundup: Shiseido included in Dow Jones Sustainability World Index, The Estée Lauder Companies named top company for female executives
19 Nov 2021 --- This week in personal care news, Shiseido was included in the Dow Jones Sustainability World Index (DJSI World). The Estée Lauder Companies (ELC) was named one of the top companies for its high number of executive women within its companies. Meanwhile, Lush Cosmetics partnered with a delivery service in anticipation of the season for holiday purchases.
Certifications
Beauty company Shiseido was included in DJSI World, a representative global stock index for sustainability investment, and the Dow Jones Sustainability Asia Pacific Index (DJSI Asia Pacific), which targets companies in the Asia Pacific region. The indexes analyze and evaluate the performance of the world’s companies in terms of economic, environmental and social criteria. The DJSI are considered among the most influential indexes for investment decisions focused on corporate social responsibility.
Weleda’s B Corp certification highlights the company’s dedication to healthy soils, preservation of biodiversity, biodynamic and regenerative agriculture, and fair trade. The company’s B Corp certification had a score of 106.9. Notably, Weleda has 100% of its products certified as natural cosmetics by the International Natural and Organic Cosmetics Association. Weleda is one of two key cosmetic brands to receive the new Union for Ethical BioTrade certification “Sourcing with Respect.”
ELC was named Seramount’s (an inclusion index formerly known as the Diversity Best Practices Inclusion Index) 2021 top companies for executive women list. Seramount celebrates companies that champion women’s advancement, focusing on succession planning, profit-and-loss role, gender pay parity, support programs and work-life balance programs. The index detailed that the female board of directors increased 5% points to 36% from 31% in 2020.

In Good Conscience, a personal care brand, unveiled its first assortment of body wash products in all-natural mandarin rose, rosemary bergamot and peppermint sage fragrances. Each body wash is crafted to meet clean beauty standards and is steeped with select natural derived ingredients, including sustainably sourced babassu oil, known for its hydrating and antioxidant properties. Additionally, In Good Conscience utilizes black and minority-owned and led companies throughout its value chain process, including community banks and marketing agencies, to fulfill its “cultural sustainability.”
Business developments
Natural men’s soap and personal care company Dr. Squatch has broadened its retail presence by entering the growing personal care category in Walmart stores nationwide. Dr. Squatch products will be displayed in the natural products aisle, furthering its mission to inspire men to become healthier and happier by elevating their personal care routine with high-quality, natural products that work. All Dr. Squatch products are made from natural ingredients and are free from harsh chemicals and synthetic ingredients. The brand’s bar soaps in scents like pine tar, fresh falls, wood barrel bourbon and cedar citrus will be available at Walmart stores. Its Soap Gripper shower booster that helps extend the life of soap shampoo and conditioner – in pine tar and fresh falls scents – will also be available in store.
Lush Cosmetics, a personal care products provider and DoorDash, a last-mile logistics platform have partnered to offer same-day delivery of Lush’s complete range of fresh, handmade products from more than 250 stores across the US and Canada. The partnership marks the first time Lush will offer same-day delivery, powered through DoorDash Drive, DoorDash’s white-label fulfillment platform that powers direct delivery for businesses. The partnership comes in time for the holiday season when many consumers are gifting convenient and on-demand Lush items.
Announcements
Beauty giant Coty named Dr. Shimei Fan as its chief scientific officer. Previously a senior vice president of Shiseido’s Americas Innovation Center, Fan will take up the new position in January, based in Amsterdam, the Netherlands. As chief scientific officer, Fan will head up the 500 employees in the organization’s global R&D and innovation function and lead on sustainability. Coty R&D is responsible for expanding and evolving the organization’s portfolio of products by combining new technologies with prevailing beauty trends.
