Kao repels dengue fever with Bioré serum mosquito repellent in Thailand
15 Jun 2022 --- Japan-based Kao is introducing the Bioré Guard Mos Block Serum mosquito repellent in Thailand. The natural citronella oil-formulated “Mos Protection Skin Shield” serum acts as a skin shield against mosquitoes and can be used daily.
The Bioré Guard Mos Block Serum is being introduced alongside the company’s #Guard Our Future project, which aims to save lives from mosquito-borne diseases such as dengue fever.
The #Guard Our Future project will begin in Thailand and gradually expand to the rest of Southeast Asia. The initiative is multi-faceted as it combines dengue fever awareness campaigns, field testing and research.
The Bioré Guard Mos Block Serum is non-sticky and available in floral blossom fragrance and lavender valley fragrance. The product uses technology to protect people from mosquitoes’ blood-feeding by distributing the formulation and covering the skin as a protective shield.
According to Kao, the fever has been a serious societal issue in Southeast Asian countries and the illness is now spreading to other regions of the world due to global warming.
Providing the skin with a protective shield
Dengue fever is characterized by a high fever and flu-like symptoms. Dengue hemorrhagic fever, a severe form of dengue fever, can result in significant bleeding, a drop in blood pressure caused by shock and death.
Kao’s technology has a different action method than conventional insect repellents like DEET (diethyltoluamide) and Picaridin, which rely on volatile active ingredients. By leveraging this technology, the Bioré Guard Mos Block Serum mosquito repellent product is non-sticky and as easy to apply as a serum.
ESG strategy and life protection
The Kirei Lifestyle Plan, Kao Group’s ESG strategy, was launched in April 2019. Kao launched its mid-term plan 2025 (K25) in 2021 with the objective of “protecting future lives – sustainability as the only path.”
Kao’s first concrete initiative for “protecting future lives” is the #Guard Our Future project. With the project’s implementation in Thailand as a starting point, it is planned to broaden the scope of the project’s activities in the future to include additional Asian regions impacted by mosquito-borne infectious diseases.
In the future, the Bioré brand will offer products in an even broader range of categories, creating a new business model that assists people through its products and programs. Kao will continue to incorporate ESG into its business strategy.
Tracking Kao’s previous moves
Kao has had a prolific year where it previously developed a 3D shampoo sheet and laundry detergent for astronauts. In other developments, Kao and Kosé collaborated to work in the cosmetics industry’s sustainability sector to create a more environmentally sustainable society.
The company was also a member of the EcoBeautyScore Consortium, which aimed to provide consumers with an environmental impact assessment and scoring system that will allow them to make sustainable decisions.
