Singer Ciara launches vitamin C-based skincare line for inclusivity
16 Sep 2022 --- Grammy award-winning entertainer Ciara has launched her skincare brand, On A Mission (OAM), for customers to access comprehensible clinical skincare designed for all skin types and tones.
Ciara says that her skin journey served as an inspiration for the line. She had difficulties establishing an understandable and clinical-grade skincare routine, so she decided to create one.
The line comprises five products: cleanser, serum, eye cream, moisturizer and brightening pads. All items have one focused ingredient, vitamin C.
OAM has stated they are committed to inclusivity, ensuring the line has been tested on all skin tones and have implemented a Skincare Advisory Board with “a diverse group of women.”
Vitamin C, also known as ascorbic acid, is popularly known as a brightening agent for skin. It is considered a superpower ingredient in the skincare world, but some versions aggravate sensitive skin, particularly in customers with rosacea.
However, OAM has created Tri-C Pro-Peptide Complex – after 11 variations – which they claim is a superior formulation of vitamin C.
The complex is a blend of peptides and three refined forms of vitamin C penetrating every skin layer. The vitamin C is on a time-release delivery system that distributes micro-doses of the ingredient all-day.
The creators of OAM worked on its formulation with a pharmaceutical skincare research lab with over 40 years of experience. The process took eight months of research and 18 months of development. The company states the product contains “medical grade ingredients that are backed by science.”
Customers can purchase all the products individually, but the producers recommend using them as a set.
The products are numbered in what order to use them for clarity. Which product to use is clear at what point in the consumer’s skincare routine, telling them how to layer products and use them as a complete system.
Ciara’s motivation
Through visiting many dermatologists, Ciara learned that clinical skincare can be transformative but also confusing. She saw the cosmeceuticals’ effects on the skin but did not view them as coherent or accessible to the everyday consumer.
“With the creation of OAM, I made clinical skincare simple for all. Clinical-level products have given me the best results, but it’s not a world all people can access,” expresses Ciara.
Highlighting Diversity
Committed to improving diversity, OAM tested its products on all skin types. They wanted their skincare to be “developed, tested and proven for all skin tones and skin types.”
OAM went through clinical testing of all its products on a diverse panel of 96 women covering every skin tone on the Fitzpatrick scale, something not typically done by brands.
Celebrity, Ciara, announces new skincare brand OAM committed to inclusion for all skin types.
To continue infusing diversity into the brand, they developed a Skincare Advisory Board. They want to use the board “to ensure they are delivering on their clinical promise.”
The group of women on the board includes board-certified dermatologist Dr. Tiffany Libby, celebrity makeup artist Yolonda Frederick Thompson, MIT Chemical Engineer JC Johnson, and Maha, one of the chemists on the brand’s research team.
Celebrity skincare
Celebrities have been creating beauty brands for years now, and with the addition of OAM, the trend does not look to be slowing down. Many celebrities have already dipped into the skincare world.
Ariana grande recently expanded her makeup line into body care at Ulta. Similarly, Alicia Keys has her line of skincare called KEYS, which released a dermatologist-developed sunscreen last month.
Kim Kardashian released her skincare line, Skkn, in June 2022. Many celebrities try to differentiate themselves from the saturated industry. As a means of standing out, Skkn marketed Kardashian’s psoriasis diagnosis as expertise and interest in the skincare industry.
Fenty Beauty by Rhianna earned the largest gross revenue of US$570 million annually, according to TooFab, in 2021. Rhianna launched her skincare line in 2020, Fenty Skin.
