US and UK retailers bet on K-beauty, dermacosmetics and premium care

Beauty retailers across the US and the UK are striking deals with K-beauty, hair care, and dermacosmetics brands with a series of launches, expansions, and campaigns. The big name retailers are putting premiumized differentiation, clinically-backed care, and consumer trust at the forefront of their messaging.

Following its Beauty Studio launch late last month, Target is debuting and expanding offerings from more premium hair care and K-beauty brands this week. The moves are part of the US retail giant’s strategy of investing in differentiating its product portfolio through curated offerings.

Meanwhile, Ulta is leaning into dermacosmetic expertise with the launch of Cosrx’s peptide-powered lip care collection and an expansion of its Rodan + Fields offerings. The retailer is leaning into skinification trends and tapping the increasingly mainstream perimenopausal skin care demographic through its expansions.

Beauty retailers are expanding K-beauty and premium care offerings across US and UK markets.

K-beauty is also making waves in the UK. Primark has launched a partnership with Pureseoul, bringing a South Korean “mini mart” beauty retail concept to UK stores. Boots has also launched the “Give It Some Boots” platform, positioning itself as a trusted beauty expert to encourage UK consumers to make purchases with more confidence.

The moves indicate that the two British retailers are freshening up their beauty brand strategies. Primark’s expansion leverages the ever-growing K-beauty landscape by integrating it into a fast fashion business model. Whereas Boots’ campaign maintains appeal for beauty across life stages, ranging from young generations to perimenopause.

The collection of major retailer developments shows how pursuing targeted brand expansions and launches is key to remaining competitive in an increasingly saturated beauty market. As the personal care industry rapidly evolves, retailers are demonstrating differing approaches to fine-tuning their strategies, indicating a versatility in potentially winning strategies.

Target differentiates with premium hair care

Target Beauty Studio carries the tag line “what’s new, now, and next in beauty,” illustrating the retailer’s focus on staying ahead of the curve by keeping its finger on the trend-driven pulse of the modern beauty landscape.

Through its Beauty Studio, the retailer is launching four Wella Company brands — Wella Professionals, Sebastian Professional, Nioxin, and Briogeo — online and in over 600 of itsTarget is using curated beauty selections to attract consumers seeking premium products. brick-and-mortar stores in the US.

Each of the four brands offers a different focus within premium hair care, aligning with Target’s strategy of differentiation through curation. The brands span salon-grade repair, professional styling, thinning-hair care, and naturally derived hair care products.

“Prestige hair care is evolving, and Target Beauty Studio gives us the opportunity to provide beauty consumers fresh, modern solutions to their hair care needs in an interesting shopping environment,” says Laure Murciano, head of sales, US Professional Hair Division at Wella Company.

The move follows Wella Company’s recent filing for an IPO in the US after the nail and hair care company backed by investment firm KKR returned to profit and increased its annual revenue to US$2.94 billion.

Diversifying K-beauty at Target

K-beauty continues to gain momentum through new retail partnerships.

Alongside its focus on hair care, Target is tapping K-beauty momentum with its new launches and expansions. Also part of Beauty Studio, Target is launching a vegan K-beauty skin care brand, Mixsoon, and expanding its partnership with K-wellness brand Clöud Café.

Mixsoon’s Target Beauty launch features the minimalist skin care brand’s Bean line — made with fermented Korean-sourced beans — Centella Asiatica line, and PDRN Collagen line. The selection reflects an appeal to clean beauty demands as consumers increasingly consider their purchases within the context of eco-consciousness and ethics.

Beauty-from-within K-beauty brand Clöud Café is expanding on its partnership with Target through a seasonal collection following its debut with the retailer in May. The limited edition holiday endcap features two flavors exclusively available at Target: Frosted Chestnut Latte and Peppermint Mocha. The expansion reflects growing interest around ingestible beauty, gourmand formulations, and their intersection with K-beauty momentum.

Two months prior to its Target launch, Clöud Café also debuted at Ulta stores as the “first ever” coffee-and-matcha brand partnership within Wellness by Ulta Beauty. Throughout its US launches, the brand has positioned itself as addressing a gap in Western markets for beauty beverages.

“In the Western market, there’s always been this ‘forgotten’ half to skin care and beauty — a lot of people still don’t realize that it’s not just about what you apply topically, but also what you put into your body,” Clöud Café founder and former CEO Olive Kim previously told Personal Care Insights.

Target has also introduced Nooni to its portfolio, marking the K-beauty lip oil brand’s US debut. The move comes as skinification trends shift lip care into a standalone care segment, encouraging innovations from various industry players.

Ulta taps dermacosmetics

Dermacosmetics and skinification trends are reshaping modern retail strategies.

Similar to Target, Ulta is taking note of K-beauty and skinification trends, but appears to be leaning further toward dermacosmetics with its recent additions than its US retail competitor.

Rodan + Fields, a dermatologist-founded skin care brand, is expanding from 150 to 400 Ulta Beauty stores in the US as part of a broader brand campaign, “Redefine What’s Possible.” Alongside its Ulta expansion, Rodan + Fields is launching on Amazon Premium Beauty and growing its presence on TikTok Shop.

The brand positions itself as an age-positive skin care brand that “meets women where they are.” The brand is part of industry growth industry toward perimenopausal skin care needs and reflects mainstream retailers’ interest in what has been called a previously overlooked consumer demographic.

“Today’s women aren’t ashamed of getting older, they’re redefining what’s possible and talking about it,” says Anncy Rowe, chief commercial officer at Rodan + Fields. “The conversation has shifted from hiding the signs of aging to owning them, sharing skin journeys and talking openly about everything from perimenopause to career pivots.”

Meanwhile, also at Ulta Beauty, South Korean derma skin care brand Cosrx has exclusively launched its nine-piece 5 Peptide Lip Collection online in the US. The collection leverages Cosrx’s peptide skin care expertise within lip care, adding to a growing collection of brands approaching lip care with the sophistication of topical skin solutions.

“As skinification continues to expand across beauty, consumers are increasingly looking for skin care-inspired ingredients and targeted benefits in their everyday lip products,” says Cosrx. The lip care collection is paired with complementary skin care ingredients, including collagen, panthenol, and ceramides, reflecting growing demand for compatible formulations.

Walk a mile in her Boots

Retailers are targeting diverse consumer needs through life-stage beauty solutions.Much like what Ulta is doing with Rodan + Fields, Boots is centering age visibility in its “Give it Some Boots” campaign. The new brand platform centers “brutiful” — beautiful and brutal — moments, and leverages Boots’ presence across life stages through its pharmacy, beauty, and wellness category reach.

“Whether people are entering a new life stage, navigating a health challenge, finding a confidence boost, or getting ready for a big night out, Boots is in their corner with trusted advice, products, and services to help people feel ready for whatever comes next,” says the retailer.

By positioning itself as a part of its consumers’ lives across life stages, the retailer appears to be aiming to personalize its appeal across a broad range of demographics in its campaign.

Aging skin is being increasingly honed in on by the personal care industry, aiming to support consumers as they navigate hormonal changes. For example, menopause has moved from a stigmatized health concern to a mainstream commercial category in beauty. 

Bringing K-beauty to fast fashion

K-beauty boom is attracting fast-fashion attention with accessible price point strategies. 

Also tapping the K-beauty boom, Irish-origin retailer Primark has launched the British-born K-beauty brand Pureseoul across 22 stores across the UK and Northern Ireland. The collaboration uses Primark’s fast fashion format with a “mini mart” beauty concept, available exclusively with the retailer.

The launch includes well-known K-beauty brands as well as “little sister” brands, which are said to make K-beauty more accessible by bringing their products to a wider audience.

“In Korea, many of our brand partners are creating ‘mini’ or ‘sister’ brands to meet the growing demand for more accessible K-Beauty, and we saw an opportunity to curate this for the UK,” says Leslie Tang, CEO of Pureseoul. The “sister” brands leverage the expertise and infrastructure of rooted beauty companies to offer performance at more accessible price points.

The move indicates that the demand for premium K-beauty at accessible price points is now exploring fast-fashion-like avenues.

This week, Kimia Koushesh, technical marketing director EMEA & APAC at Vantage Beauty, warned against fast-fashion-like business models in the beauty industry due to its overpopulation characteristics, stating that “consumers began questioning [fast fashion’s] sustainability and gravitated toward quality over quantity.”

Together, the retailers’ moves indicate changing tides in the brick-and-mortar and online beauty retail landscape as well-established shopping giants adjust their strategies. For Target, this looks like differentiation through curated brand partnerships that appeal to a wide range of consumers. Ulta is pursuing dermacosmetics and assisting in the shift of age-positive skin care into the mainstream. In the UK, Boots is appealing to its household presence through a personalized campaign and Primark is sticking to its fast-fashion expertise while integrating the demand for K-beauty.
